Is Your Air Conditioner Ready for Summer? 8 Things to Check Before the Heat Arrives
2 November 2026Your ducted air conditioner is switched on, but the house still feels warm. Some rooms might be getting cool air while others stay uncomfortable, or there may be very little air coming from the outlets. The pattern can help narrow down where the problem may be.
Start by checking that the controller is set to Cool mode, that the temperature is set below the room temperature, and that the zones you want to cool are switched on. If the settings look right and the house still isn’t cooling, check what’s happening in each room.
Some rooms are cool, but others are warm
If only certain rooms are affected, check that their zones are open on the controller. Then see whether air is coming from the outlets in those rooms.
If a zone is switched on but the airflow is weak or missing, there may be an issue with the zone controls or ductwork. Note which rooms are affected so you can explain the problem when you book a repair.
There’s weak airflow throughout the house
If air is coming from the outlets but it feels weaker than usual across the whole home, check the return air filter if it’s accessible. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions when cleaning it.
If the filter is clean and airflow is still poor, a technician can inspect the system and investigate the cause.
Air is coming from the outlets, but it feels warm
Check that the controller is in Cool mode rather than Fan mode. In Fan mode, the system circulates air without cooling it.
If the settings are correct and the air remains warm, arrange an inspection. If the controller displays an error code, take a photo to share when you book.
The system starts cooling, then stops
An air conditioner may slow down or cycle off once it reaches the set temperature. If the house is still warm when it stops, check whether a timer or schedule is active.
Make a note of how long the system runs before stopping and whether it happens throughout the house or only in certain zones. That information can help the technician investigate the fault.
