When it comes to your air conditioner's outdoor unit, some would think they're doing the right thing by covering their unit to protect it from the weather elements, or just because they see it as aesthetically unsightly.
There are even stores and dozens of Insta pages promoting their ingenious covers that will “dramatically improve the look of you’re a/c unit” and “here’s a clever way to make your outdoor aircon unit disappear!”
But what they don’t realise that they are a essentially building a recipe for disaster!
Let’s look at the reasons why you definitely should NOT cover your outdoor unit and a word that get’s thrown around called “Recirculation”.
When referring to an air conditioner's outdoor condensing unit, "recirculation" typically doesn't describe a desirable or normal operation. Instead, it might refer to a problem or condition where air from the unit's exhaust or discharge is being recirculated back into the unit. This can happen due to various reasons, and it's generally not what you want to occur in a properly functioning air conditioning system.
It's very common to see an condensing unit recirculating (or regurgitating) it’s own air because the unit is often installed at the side of the home, and not too far in front of it, sits a six foot high neighbour friendly fence! The air is exhausted from the unit and essentially rebounds back off the fence and is sucked back into the unit. We also see this from other objects obstructing the airflow like, a vehicle parked close to the unit, wheelie bins or even shrubs planted close to the unit. The same affect will occur when attempting to cover your outdoor unit when it’s operating.
Here are some of the impacts that covering your unit will have:
Airflow is Vital
Your air conditioner's outdoor unit, often referred to as the condenser unit or compressor, requires a consistent flow of air to operate efficiently. This unit is responsible for releasing heat from your home's interior to the outside. When you cover it, you disrupt this airflow, and that can have several negative consequences.
Reduced Efficiency
One of the immediate effects of covering the outdoor unit is reduced efficiency. Air conditioners work by removing heat from inside your home and transferring it outdoors. When the outdoor unit is covered, it struggles to release this heat effectively. Many air conditioner manufacturers specify in their warranties that covering the outdoor unit or failing to properly maintain it can void the warranty. This means that if you encounter issues with your AC system, you may not be covered if you've been covering the unit improperly.
So it's vital not to cover your air conditioner's outdoor unit and restrict airflow. Doing so can lead to reduced efficiency, increased energy bills, and potential damage to your AC system. Instead, focus on regular maintenance, including cleaning the unit, keeping the area around it clear of debris, and ensuring proper airflow. By doing so, you can enjoy a more efficient, longer-lasting air conditioning system and greater comfort in your home without unnecessary expenses and headaches.
